Obituary of Mary Spyropulos

Mary Spyropulos of Peabody passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 17, 2020, with her family by her side. She was predeceased by her husband, Spero Spyropulos, with whom she shared 54 years of marriage. Born in Chelsea on August 15,1926, she was the daughter of Anastasios and Helen (Dagragikas) Kostopoulos. As a young woman, Mary was a seamstress and had her own business for many years. Later in life, she worked for the Peabody Public School System as a cafeteria worker so she could be home for her children. She loved her job and the students and always addressed each and every one of them as “honey”. She enjoyed gardening, bingo, going to Foxwoods, bicycling, and doing crossword puzzles and cryptograms in the daily newspaper. She enjoyed sitting outside in the sun on her deck during the warm weather. Her biggest joy was spending time with her family especially on their yearly vacations to Disney World, summers in Maine, and watching Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy and Family Feud with them. She attended St George Greek Orthodox Church weekly with her son. After church she and her late husband Spero along with her sister Anne enjoyed taking long drives together. Mary was very proud of her Greek heritage and loved attending the St George Grecian Festival each year with her son Charles and her late granddaughter Nicole. Each Easter everyone waited for her to make her delicious Greek pastries. She was loved by everyone who affectionately referred to as “Yiayia’. She is survived by her son, Charles Spyropulos of Saugus and her daughter and son-in-law, Janet and Gary Hufnagle of Peabody. She also leaves behind her three grandsons. Corey, Colby and Luke Hufnagle of Peabody, her sister Anne Dresios of Lynn, her nieces Joanne and Elaine Dresios of Lynn, and many other nieces and nephews. In addition she leaves behind her former daughter in law Barbara Lopes of Lynnfield. She was predeceased by her brother Louis Kostopoulos and Charles Kostopoulos who was killed in action during WW II on Normandy Beach in 1944. She was also predeceased by her young granddaughter, Nicole Hufnagle, who she longingly wanted to be reunited with in Heaven. Visiting hours will be held at the Conway Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street, Peabody, on Thursday September 24, 2020 from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by a funeral service at St George Greek Orthodox Church, 54 South Common Street, Lynn. Family and friends are invited to attend. Burial will take place after the funeral service at Pine Grove Cemetery in Lynn. All attendees will be required to wear masks and adhere to social distancing guidelines.
