Obituary of Charles E. Stickney
Charles E. Stickney Sr., beloved husband, father, and grandfather, died Saturday in Danvers. He was 87. He was the fifth of 13 children born to Allan and Dorothy Stickney in Lynn. He attended local public schools and graduated Lynn Vocational High School om 1950.
He served four years in the Navy during the Korean Conflict era, and sustained injuries after a deadly boiler explosion aboard the U.S.S. Bennington, the aircraft carrier on which he served.
He spent of his career in the credit and finance field, including time with General Motors Acceptance Corp., Chrysler Credit, and, for his last 17 years of full-time employment, with Converse. For four years, he was part-owner of Loring Motors in Salem.
He also spent much of his spare time in civic and church activities. He was a 3rd Degree Mason and served that organization in roles that included religious leadership. Her served for many years in the Jaycees, earning Jaycee of the Year honors for his leadership of an annual charitable Christmas drive.
For 15 years, he was an avid volunteer for the Billy Graham Crusades, and well into his 80’s he was an enthusiastic volunteer for Haven from Hunger. He was an active member of the Second Congregational Church in South Peabody for more than 60 years, serving in roles that included deacon, treasurer, and, most recently, greeter.
He was married to the former Mary Kathleen Stickney of Gloucester, whom he met while in high school, for 62 years. He met her while working a part-time job at a soda fountain in Lynn; she was traveling home with friends who were returning for a Boston Red Sox game and stopped in for a soft drink.
The couple had four sons; Charles E Stickney, Jr, and his wife Sharon, Kenneth M. Stickney and his wife Carey, Stephen D. Stickney, and Mark C. Stickney, all of whom survived their parents. They also had seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St, Peabody. Services are set for 10:00 AM on Saturday at the Second Congregational Church, 12 Maple St, Peabody with refreshments following in the church meeting room downstairs. He will be buried beside his wife at Calvary Cemetery Gloucester. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Haven from Hunger, 81 Main St, Peabody, MA 01960.
