So, I’d like to take just a few minutes to talk about Gramp Crane. His kindness, wisdom and no bullshit attitude are what made him to be the wonderful Gruff Old Bastard that he could be.
Over the last several years, I spent many hours having intimate conversations with Gramp about his life and how full it was.
He told stories about being raised by his foster family in Reading during the depression. Many times he reminisced about the sprawling wooded property and the fields that were littered with fruit trees. While talking it was as if he still had the taste of a fresh apple on his tongue. Gramp would always chuckle about the massive German Shepherds that were on the property and how they would chase anyone who attempted to pull up the driveway. His face would light up while beginning to rave about how as a child being able to grab his .22 rifle and walk right out the back door to go hunting and target shooting. Also, he’d tell stories about fixing up an old junk Model T and drive it crazily around the wooded property. His freedoms were endless.
The family was in the oil business and he told brutal stories of how at a very young age he helped make deliveries carrying jugs of oil in the winter snow. Gramp carried this work ethic over into his mature years as he gained employment at the General Electric and worked his way up the ladder at the Gear Plant, keep in mind he also maintained a second job driving the oil truck for many years.
While working these jobs tirelessly Gramp and Nana purchased land in Freedom N.H. located on Ossipee Lake. This is where they would build their second home known to us as the “Camp”. Gramp and Nana literally built the Camp from the ground up spending many nights sleeping in a tent until the house was habitable. He became well know within the lakeside community, Mountview, while being assigned Road Captain as he endlessly labored and cared for the community completing impossible tasks single handed to help save money and improve the quality of life for the residents.
Also, for a period of time he was elected as President of the association and selflessly accomplished many improvements for everyone to enjoy.
As time wore on and Nana passed away Gramp didn’t get to Camp very much, I think in a sense things didn’t feel right without her there. As most of us know, Gramp was always getting into trouble tinkering with things. I remember him telling a story that happened while he traveled up to Camp on his own after Nana passed. While driving up route sixteen in the van he looked out the drivers side window and saw an entire wheel roll past the drivers side window, he looked at it in astonishment then suddenly realized it was one of the wheels that was supposed to be on his van!!. Luckily he was able to safely pull over and wait for help. Apparently the day prior he was working on the wheels and had forgotten to tighten the lugs!
Gramp was a very strong man and fought the battle of time. At age ninety-four he could still be found climbing ladders, building and repairing things in his workshop or just working around the yard at home.
In recent months it was evident to him that time was beginning to overshadow the quality of his life. He could no longer drive, work in his workshop and simple everyday tasks began to become difficult and frustrating for him. I think Gramp knew it was time to move on to his next journey and join so many friends and family members that have departed us all.
We will all miss Gramp Crane.
For all the wrong that is occurring during these turbulent times. Gramp’s favorite word:
DUMMIES!
