Obituary of Henry L. Marchewka

Henry L. Marchewka 87 years of Peabody, husband of the late Sophie (Katin) Marchewka, died on Friday March 4th at the Peabody Glen Health and Care Facility in Peabody. Mr. Marchewka was born on April 11, 1917 in Peabody son of the late Martin and Serafina (Brolewicz) Marchewka. He was raised and educated in Peabody and was a lifelong resident. He was a U.S. Army Sergeant combat veteran of World War II who saw action in the battles of Northern France, the Ardennes and the Rhineland. He was attached to the 957th Ordnance Heavy Automotive Maintenance Company. Mr. Marchewka worked for many years at the A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Peabody. When A.C. Lawrence closed it’ s Peabody operations, he returned to school and subsequently became a technician at MIT. Mr. Marchewka retired from MIT in 1982. Mr. Marchewka was an offering collector at his beloved St. Joseph’ s Church which he helped build, a member of St. Michael’ s Society, the Knights of Columbus Leo Council 508 and the VFW Fidelity Post 1011 all in Peabody. He always looked forward to marching in the Memorial Day parade with his fellow veterans. He was an avid golfer, golfing on St. Michael’ s Golf league, a bowler and gardener. He took great delight in following the sports activities of his grandchildren. Mr. Marchewka particularly enjoyed watching the 2004 World Series in which his beloved Red Sox were victorious. He is survived by a son and his wife, Charles and Dolores Marchewka of Duxbury; a daughter and her husband, Karen and Edward Cahill of Peabody; a sister, Sabina Bridge of Nashua NH; 6 grandchildren, Patricia O’ Keefe Dalton of Lynn, Jonathan Cahill of PA, Matthew Cahill of CT, Sarah Cahill of Peabody, Martin Marchewka of Abington and Nicholas Marchewka of Arlington; 2 great grandchildren, Kathryn and Christina Dalton of Lynn and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Stasia Murawski and Chester Marchewka. His funeral will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., location Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Ann’ s Church, 140 Lynn St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Tuesday 5 - 8 p.m. Burial in Highland Cemetery, Ipswich.
