Obituary of George Bettencourt

George Bettencourt, 86, of Peabody died Monday evening at the Salem Hospital. He was the husband of the late Catherine (Kipouris) Bettencourt who died in 2004. He was born in Peabody on January 28, 1921, the son of the late Manuel and Josephine (Silva) Bettencourt and was educated and resided here all his life. He was the proprietor of Bettencourt Fuels in Peabody for 32 years from 1942 until 1974. He then merged his business with JR. Sousa & Sons Oil Company and was employed there for 10 years until his retirement 19 years ago. He was a distinguished veteran of WW 11 serving overseas with the US Army in Northern France and in the battle of the Bulge. He was a Life member and former commander and secretary/treasurer for many years of the Portuguese American War Veterans, Post 1 of Peabody. He and his wife enjoyed traveling throughout the country visiting their grandchildren and summered for many years in Ogunquit, Maine. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Corbin Bettencourt of Middleburg, VA, his three grandchildren, Richard Bettencourt Jr. and his wife Laini of Gaithersburg, MD, Griffin and his wife Jaime Bettencourt of Charlotte, NC and Bradford Bettencourt of Charlotte, SC and his great grandchildren, Madison Jane Bettencourt, Colman Patrick Bettencourt and Cohen Megeath Bettencourt and many nieces and nephews. A Visitation will be held on Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Saturday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody/Salem line at 10:00 AM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to North Shore Elder Services, 152 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923 in his memory.
