Obituary of Virgilio Manuel de Melo
Virgilio Manuel de Melo, 60, of Peabody died Friday evening at the Shaughnessey Rehabilitation hospital, Salem from injuries sustained in a fall last spring.
He was born in Gracioza, Azores, Portugal on March 26, 1947, the son of the late Verissimo and Graciolinda (de Sousa Mendonca) de Melo and was raised there before moving to Peabody 40 yeas ago. While in Portugal, he served in the Portuguese Army in Africa and later worked on a cruise ship the Perfect Prince.
In America, he had been employed as a warehouse manager for the R.C.G. LLC Company in Peabody for the past 30 years.
He was a member of the Portuguese American Post # 1 of Peabody, the Club Luis de Camoes, The Holy Ghost Society and the Our Lady of Help Society all of Peabody. He enjoyed music and was a member of the Portuguese Marching Band of Lowell.
He is survived by his six brothers, Verissimo Manuel, Carlos M., Almerindo M., and Mario Nuno de Melo all of the Azores, Portugal, Antonio A. de Melo of Hudson, Ma and Joseph Antonio and his wife Elisa de Melo of Salem, three sisters, Maria de Lourdes Mendonca de Melo and Maria Cecelia de Melo both of the Azores and Mariana M. Bettencourt of Toronto, Canada,. an Aunt, Maria Edelina Silva of Peabody and fourteen nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to the charity of your choice.
