Obituary of Gilbert R. "Gil" Odom

Gilbert R. “Gil” Odom, 86, husband of Rita M. (Carney) Odom of Peabody, died on Tuesday September 4, 2007 surrounded by his family at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center in Burlington. Mr. Odom was born November 27, 1920 in Leonville Louisiana son of the late James R. and Madeline (Cuntz) Odom. He was raised and educated in Leonville and received his Degree in Electrical Engineering from Southwestern Louisiana Institute. Before moving to the North Shore in 1941, he resided in Schenectady NY and Bridgeport CT. He also resided in Beverly for many years before returning to Peabody in 2000. Mr. Odom began his working career in 1943 as an Electrical Engineer at the General Electric in Schenectady NY. He was also employed at the G.E. Bridgeport CT and Lynn Plants until 1958. From 1958 until his retirement in 1984 he was employed in the same capacity at Raytheon. He was a Ham Radio Operator for many years, enjoyed building model airplanes and researching genealogy. In addition to his wife with whom he shared 62 years of marriage, he is survived by his children and their spouses, Thomas R. Odom of Marina Del Rey CA, Richard J. Odom of Syracuse NY, Philip S. and Debra Odom of Havelock NC, Anne M. Odom of Peabody and Janis K. and Peter Hunter of Heidelberg Ontario; a brother and his wife, J.R. and Clara Odom of Beaumont TX; 9 grandchildren; 1 great grandchild and several nieces and nephews. His son Robert and his sister Myrtle Odom pre deceased him. His Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday September 7, 2007 at 11 a.m. in St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. As per his request there will be no visiting hours. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Holly V. Winschel Supplemental Needs Trust, C/O Joseph Carpenter, 154 Greenland Drive, Syracuse, NY 13208. Burial in Beverly Farms Cemetery.
