Obituary of Bernard W. "Barney" Judge
Lt. Col(ret) Bernard W. “Barney” Judge, 93, of Dover, Ma and formerly of Peabody, MA and Ft. Lauderdale , FL, died peacefully Monday morning at the Marist Hill Nursing Home in Waltham. He was the husband of the late Catherine (Romanowicz) Judge.
He was born and raised in Peabody the son of the late Matthew F. and Annie Marie (Healey) Judge and was a graduate from Peabody High School. He entered the US Army in 1941 and served as an Operations and Training Staff officer overseas in France. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern service Medal, the American Service Medal, the WW11 Victory Medal and the
American Defense Service Medal. He also recieved a citation of outstanding achievement award for his mapping of the military troops in France during WW 11.
He was discharged as a Captain in 1945 and then served with the 102nd Field Artillary Yankee Division of the Mass National Guard retiring as a Lt. Col in June 1974. He was also a member of the Second Corps Cadets Veterans Association. He was a graduate of the US Army War College in Leavenworth Kansas and during his military career, he was a beacon in advising and instructing the young men during there careers in the US Army.
He was and avid reader and enjoyed Military History and Political Science books. Mr. Judge was also a life member of the Leo Council,# 508 Knights of Columbus of Peabody and participated in many philanthropic endeavors.
He was a principal at the Judge Leather Company in Danversport for 35 years prior to his retirement. He and his wife then resided in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl before moving back to Massachusetts. Barney enjoyed playing golf and had a great disposition that was cherished not only by his family but all that came in contact with him.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Janice and her husband Charles Fox of Dover, MA, and Maureen Reinstein, wife of the late Revere Mayor and state representative William G. Reinstein of Revere, a son and daughter-in-law Matthew and his wife Janice Judge of Milford, NH, 10 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. He was the father of the late Joy Lomas and the brother of the late John, Matthew and Lilly Judge and Mae Judge Moran.
A Visitation will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral will be held on Friday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. John’s Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
