Obituary of Manuel da Cunha Santos

Manuel da Cunha Santos Peabody--Manuel da Cunha Santos, 63, beloved husband of Maria Santos, died unexpectedly on Friday morning at the North Shore Medical Center—Salem Hospital following a long illness with cancer. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Jose Sousa and Maria Lucia dos Santos. He lived there for 24 years, and served in the Portuguese Army during the Guine War in Africa. He emigrated to the United States on November 26, 1968, settling in Peabody where he lived for the past 39 years. Mr. Santos worked with A.C. Burg Company in Salem for 16 years, Rex Leather Finishing for 14 years, Alliance Leather for four years, and Liberty Carton (formerly Bicknell & Fuller) in Peabody for two years until his recent retirement. He was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody, was a member of the Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost of Peabody. He enjoyed gardening, expecially growing Kale, making wine, and loved spending time with his family. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends, including: his wife Maria (Mello) Santos of Peabody, with whom he shared 40 years of marriage; a son and daughter-in-law, Manuel Jose & Diana Fatima Santos of Salem; a grandson, Nathan Joseph Melo Santos of Salem; two sisters, Adalgisa da Silva of Peabody and Zulmira dos Santos of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal; one brother, Antonio Santos of Peabody, and many nieces, nephews, and numerous friends in Peabody and in the Azores. His funeral will be held on Tuesday at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are invited. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to Azorean Brotherhood of the Divine Holy Ghost of Peabody, Howley St., Peabody, MA 01960.
