Evangeline Porter (Goodridge) Newhall, 97
Peabody--Evangeline Porter (Goodridge) Newhall, 97, a lifelong resident of Peabody, died early Thursday morning, October 18, 2007 at the Peabody Glen Health Care Center following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late Ralph Austin Newhall with whom she shared 51 years of marriage before his death in 1988.
Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late B. Elmer and Annie Evangeline (Porter) Goodridge. She was raised and educated in Peabody and was a graduate of Peabody High School, Class of 1928.
Mrs. Newhall worked as a Receptionist in the office of S. Chase Tucker, M.D. and was employed at the Mutual Fire Insurance Bureau of Salem before becoming a homemaker. For many years she worked at the polls on Election Day, the last several years as Deputy Warden.
Evangeline will be remembered for many wonderful qualities, and she enjoyed being with family and friends, and working in her flower garden. She was an active and longtime member of the First Baptist Church in Peabody from 1929 until it closed in May of 1995. She taught Sunday School classes, sang in the Choir, was active in the Visiting and Flower Committees, and served as the Secretary of the Women’s Group (Bereans). In addition, she was Treasurer of the Parsonage Society, a Board Member of the South Danvers Benevolent Society, and Chairman of the Board of Deacons. She was also a member of the AARP and Peabody Council on Aging. She became a member of the Trinity Baptist Church in Lynnfield in October 1995, which eventually is known as the TruLife Christian Fellowship.
Mrs. Newhall is survived by two sons Henry H. & his wife Marie Newhall of Peabody and Harold G.& his wife Barbara Newhall of Rowley and a daughter-in-law Sandra (Newhall) MacDonald of Peabody; five grandchildren, Sandra Lee (Newhall) Raymond of NH, Michael C. Newhall of West Newbury, Diane (Newhall) Broughton of Peabody, David H. Newhall of Waltham, and Amanda (Newhall) Guest of Haverhill; six great grandchildren, three great- great grandchildren, and several cousins, nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, and great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews. . She was preceded in death by a son, Richard C. Newhall, and a brother Lester Goodridge, Sr., both of Peabody.
Her funeral will be held on Saturday at 11 AM in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited.
A visitation will precede from 9:30 to 11 AM in the funeral home.
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in her memory to TruLife Christian Fellowship, 227 Summer St., Lynnfield, MA 01940.
