Obituary of Mary O. (Griffith) Sylvester
Mary O. (Griffith) Sylvester, 98, of Peabody, died peacefully Monday evening at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody following a brief illness. She was the devoted wife of the late William Sylvester.
Born in Somerville, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Kelly) Griffith. She later lived in Lynnfield and attended Lynnfield Public Schools. She has spent the last 70 years living in Peabody.
She attended the Robert Brent Brigham Nursing School and graduated in 1931. She was a LPN Nurse who worked at the Hunt Hospital in Danvers, and later, before retiring, she worked at the Union Hospital in Lynn.
She was a member of the Golden Agers, Sodality at St. John’s in Peabody, and attended the Peabody Council on Aging. She also was an avid reader who enjoyed reading for relaxation.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Elizabeth and her husband Edward Slomba of Scottsdale, Arizona, and Donna and her husband Robert Hurd of Newport News, Virginia, a brother, James Griffith of West Boylston, a sister, Edna Robinson of Long Beach, CA, and is also survived by two grandchildren, Elizabeth Slomba of Saco, Maine, and Michael and his wife Laura Slomba of Dartmouth, two great grandchildren, Aimee and Alex Slomba and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was the mother of the late Joan Marie Sylvester.
Her funeral service will be held on Friday at 8:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9:00 AM in St. John’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 2:00 until 4:00 PM. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to the Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
