Obituary of Maria da Silva Bettencourt

Maria da Silva Bettencourt, 79, of Peabody, died early Thursday morning at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home following a brief illness. She was the wife of Joao Espinola of Portugal. Born in Santa Cruz, Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Joao de Sousa and Delfina da Silva Bettencourt. She was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1975 she immigrated to the United States and has been a resident of Peabody ever since. While living in Peabody, she worked as an operator at Sweetheart Plastics Paper Factory in Wakefield before retiring. She is survived by a son, John N. Espinola of Peabody, a daughter, Maria do Livramento Silva of Canada, five brothers, Jose, Ermelindo, Antero, Albano, and David Bettencourt, her sisters, Eugenia Ortins, Ondina Lobao, and Fulmira Bettencourt, she is also survived by six grandchildren, Michael, Brian, and Lina Silva and Elizabeth, Jonathan, and Jenna Espinola. She was the sister of the late Raymond, Joao, and Manuel Bettencourt and Armandinha Lobao, Eduina Bettencourt and Delfina Mendonca. Her Funeral Service will be held on Saturday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody Facility, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held today, Friday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem
