Obituary of Arthur F. "Sonny" Hammond

Arthur F. “Sonny” Hammond PEABODY—Arthur F. “Sonny” Hammond, 87, beloved husband of Julia (Maihos) Hammond of Peabody, died unexpectedly on Saturday evening at the Rosewood Nursing Home in Peabody following a long illness. Born in Peabody, he was a lifelong resident of the city. He was the son of the late Arthur and Rachel (Jacques) Hammond. He attended Peabody schools. Mr. Hammond served in the United States Army during World War II. He worked as a Leather Worker with A.C. Lawrence Leather for years, then was a Painter with the City of Peabody for many years before retiring nearly 20 years ago. He was Union Steward. Arthur was an avid baseball fan and coached in youth baseball leagues. He was also a member of the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1409 of Peabody. He is survived by: his wife, Julia (Maihos) Hammond of Peabody, with whom he shared over 60 years of marriage; his First Cousins, Fred & Adelaide Emmett of Peabody and Margaret & William Brimmer of NY; three sisters-in-law, Dorothy Maihos and Mary Franggos, both of Peabody, and Georgia Maihos of Beverly; his three Godchildren, Maureen Pearson of NH, James Garnham of Peabody, and Judith Crossman of RI; special nieces and nephews, Dorothea Ingalls of Hamilton, Donald Hayes of Wenham, Mariann & George Illingworth of Peabody, Peter & Tracey Franggos of Byfield, John Maihos of Beverly, George Maihos of NH, Gordon Crossman, III of RI, John Crossman of ME, and many other extended family cousins, nieces, nephews and grandnieces and grandnephews. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 4 to 7 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody. His funeral will be held on Wednesday, gathering at 8 AM in the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. John’s Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited.
