Obituary of Ruth (Hayes) Upton
PEABODY Ruth (Hayes) Upton, 95, beloved wife of the late John Upton, died Friday afternoon at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center Hospital in Burlington following an extended illness.
Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Nora (Desmond) Hayes. She lived in Peabody for most of her life, and attended Peabody schools. She was a student at the time of the St. John’ s School Fire of 1914. She graduated from Peabody High School. She lived in Newport, RI for a short time while her husband was in the Navy.
Mrs. Upton worked as a Supervisor with Employers Insurance Company of Salem for several years.
She was active in St. John the Baptist Parish, enjoyed traveling, and was active with the Peabody Golden Agers as a former Chairperson of the Function and Welfare Committees. She was a member of the Retired Naval Officers Ladies Auxilliary and the Fleet Reserve Ladies Auxilliary in Newport, RI.
She is survived by: three nieces, Ruth M. Dunn of Hamilton, A. Ellen Prochilo of Peabody, and Noreen Donahue of Harwich, MA. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas P. Hayes, and sisters Alice E. Donahue, Marion Hayes, and Grace Hayes.
Her funeral will be held on Tuesday at 8 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, at the 12 Chestnut St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited.
