Obituary of Maria (Goncalves de Sa') Gomes

Maria Gomes, 69, wife of Julio Gomes of Peabody, died after a brief illness on Friday, February 22, 2008 at the Rosewood Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Peabody with her family at her side. Maria was born on April 15, 1938, in Ponte Do Lima, Portugal, daughter of the late Jose Da Costa and Maria (Olivera Goncalves) Sa. She was raised and educated in Portugal. She immigrated to the United States in 1969 making her home in Peabody. Maria was employed for 32 years as a leather trimmer at Masino Leather Company in Peabody until her retirement in 2001. She dedicated her entire life to her family and to her grandchildren whom she adored. She was very proud of her flower gardens and also enjoyed cooking. In addition to her husband of 46 years, she is survived by her 2 sons and their wives, Carlos and Laurie Gomes of Salem and Fernando and Lisa Gomes of Peabody; 2 sisters, Joaquina Sa of Peabody and Rosa Pinto of Portugal; 4 grandchildren, Kristopher, Marc, Sophia and Alex; a niece and her husband, Connie and Antonio Bettencourt of Peabody and many other nieces and nephews. Her sister Silvena Sa of Portugal predeceased her. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, February 27, 2008 at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur, 82 Lynn St. (new location) Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Our Lady of Fatima Church, 50 Walsh Ave., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Tuesday 5 to 8 p.m. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
