Obituary of John A. McCarthy

John A. McCarthy, 68, husband of Nancy J. (Bozek) McCarthy of Peabody, died on Sunday, March 9, 2008 at his home following a courageous battle with cancer. His family members were at his side. John was born on December 27, 1939 in Peabody, son of the late William and Ruth V. (Cox) McCarthy. He was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School Class of 1958. In 1958, he enlisted into the U.S. Navy and served with the Heavy Attack Squadron before being honorably discharged in 1962. John began his working career as a machinist and remained for 20 years at Autoroll of Salem and Middleton. He was then employed for 9 years in the same capacity at the G.E. Riverworks Plant in Lynn. For the following 5 years, he was at the Berringers Company of Marblehead until his retirement in 1999. Since his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his family, friends and neighbors in his garage that he crafted into a nostalgic coffee shop and was a past member of the Peabody Lodge of Elks #1409. In addition to his high school sweetheart with whom he shared 46 years of marriage, he is survived by his children, Deborah A. Sousa of Peabody and David J. and his wife Kathleen A. McCarthy of Assonet; 4 grandchildren, Samantha and Sarah Sousa of Peabody, Jonathan and Kelly McCarthy of Assonet; his sister and her husband, Barbara and Donald Brigley of Peabody; 2 brothers and a sister-in-law, Ed McCarthy and Michael and Nancy McCarthy all of Peabody; many nieces, nephews and his special friends, Marie and Joseph Michaud of Peabody. His siblings, Louise O’Brien, William and James McCarthy predeceased him. His funeral will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2008 at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., (new facility) Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Salem-Peabody line. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Wednesday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody, MA 01960.
