Obituary of Herbert Stratton Greeley

Herbert Stratton Greeley, 94, formerly of Swampscott passed away April 25, 2008 at Brooksby Village, Peabody. There will be a memorial service to celebrate his life at the Brooksby Village Chapel on Wednesday at 1:00 PM. Herb was born in Hudson, MA on November 27, 1913. He graduated from Hudson High School in 1931. He obtained a Bachelor’s Degree in Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology. During World War II, he participated in the invasion of North Africa in 1942 and then was ordered to Burma and India as a member of the 10th US Army Air Force, where he served as a Staff Sergeant in the specialty of Airborne Early Warning until 1945. After World War II, he returned to the General Electric River Works where he enjoyed 42 year career as a Test Planner in the Aircraft Engine Department. He eventually settled in Swampscott to raise his family with his wife, Betty. During his residence in Swampscott, he was a long time Town Meeting Member and was active in the Swampscott Little League, serving as President in 1965. Herb was also an active member of the Central Congregational Church of Lynn, where he served as a trustee of the church for 30 years. Most recently, Herb was a proud resident of Brooksby Village. He was a member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the Aleppo Temple, the Philanthropic Lodge of Masons, the United Brotherhood Lodge, and the Wayfarer’s Lodge. He is survived by Elizabeth Morse (French) Greeley, his wife of 58 years and his four sons, Douglas and wife Jean of Bloomfield, NJ, Stuart and wife Colleen of Lynn, Ronald and wife Patricia of Groveland and Philip of Lynn, and 6 grandchildren. He also leaves 2 sisters, Viola Ross and Mary Elizabeth Fillmore of Hudson. Herb will long be remembered for his love of woodworking, the outdoors, photography and his enthusiasm for all things New England, most notably its sports and its history.
