Obituary of John J. McCarthy

John J. McCarthy, 76, of Salem, died Thursday evening at the Salem Hospital following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Rita (Connell) McCarthy with whom he shared over 26 years of marriage. Born in Lynn, he was the son of the late Daniel and Hannah (Reen) McCarthy. He was raised and educated in Lynn and was a graduate of St. Mary’s High School. He has lived in Salem for over 30 years. He was a veteran of the Korean War who served with the United States Marines and was honorable discharged in February of 1952. After the war, he started his career and attended the Massachusetts Bricklayers Apprentice Certification Program. He later became a certified Massachusetts Building Inspector and worked for the city of Lynn as a building inspector for 10 years. He also attended the U.S. Coast Guard Boaters Safety Program, and for the past 30 years, he was a State Building Inspector for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, Department of Public Safety, which was based out of Massport Fire Rescue Headquarters. John was also a member of the Mass Building Commissioners & Inspectors Association, a 51 year member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, 4th Degree, and Facilities Manager, Hibernian Building Corp., and was past President of the Bricklayers, Masons & Plasterers Union Local # 12 John was deeply cherished by all those who knew and loved him and was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather whose life was centered around his family and friends. He is survived by a son Edward Boggoch of Peabody, six daughters, Debra and her husband Lloyd Harsip of Beverly, Donna McCarthy of Peabody, Elizabeth Dunn of Salem, Joanne and her husband Steven Panzero of Lynnfield, Maureen and her husband Michael Jackson of Lynn and Joan and her husband Richard Bunaskavich of Lynn, a brother, Francis McCarthy of Lynn and also by his loving and devoted 14 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was the father-in-law of the late Edward McCarthy and brother of the late Daniel McCarthy. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in Wadsworth Cemetery, Danvers. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his name to a charity of one’s choice.
