Obituary of Paul Apostulos Meniates

Paul Apostolus Meniates,93, of Peabody died Saturday at his residence with his family by his side after a long illness. He was the husband of the late Georgia (Demopoulos) Meniates with whom he shared 52 years of marriage before her death in 1987. He was born in Salem on June 18, 1915, the son of the late Xenophon and Helen (Panagopoulos) Meniates and later moved to Peabody before going to Greece with his family. In 1935, he returned to United States and settled in Peabody. He was employed in the leather industry for many years, first with the former John Flynn and Sons Tanning Co of Salem an in 1960 he managed the Meniates Tanning Co for twenty years before retiring in 1980. He worked tirelessly in helping the Greek War Relief in Tag Day Sales held throughout the North Shore area and at the former Strand Theatre. He devoted many years to St Vasilios Church as a youth advisor for the G.O.Y.A. and J.O.Y. clubs. He also worked diligently on the Beano committee, the Survey and Census committee and the Educational-Community center committee. He had been a member of the Church Council serving as a Board Member and as Church Treasurer and also was a member of the Men’s Club working on the Kitchen Crew during the Festivals. He was a softball pitcher for many years with the Peabody recreational league and was also knows as “Bubbles” for many years. He also coached the St. Vasilios Church Girls Softball team. His devotion to his family and his church was instilled into his own family and had endeared him to his community and was named the Parishioner of the Year in 1987.. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Gail Meniates of Beverly and a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Ted Terzakis of Beverly, his loving grandchildren, John Terzakis, Cynthia Gakos and Peter - Paul Meniates, his great grandchildren, Nicholas and Kristina Terzakis, and Alexandra Gakos . He was the brother of the late Dimitri, Christie, Arthur, Charles and James Meniates. A Visitation will be held on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at he Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by Services in St. VAsiliois Greek Church, Peabody at 11:00 AM. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
