Obituary of John Sulo Kauppinnen, Sr.

John S. Kauppinen, Sr., 89, husband of the late Dorothy (Krankka) Kauppinen, died Friday morning at the Salem Hospital following a brief illness. Born in the village of Karangau Kyla in the town of Kuartane, Finland, he was the son of the late Elias Kauppinen and the late Hilja (Kangas) (Kauppinen) Mantyla. He emigrated to the United States with his family, starting in Rockport. They moved to Lynn, where he attended Lynn public schools, and lived in Peabody for nearly 70 years. He was a veteran of World War II, with service in the United States Army as a Quartermaster in New Guinea. Mr. Kauppinen worked as a Truck Driver with Remis Leather Co., Peabody then Worked in the pastuerization process at Holden’ s Dairy,Peabody and was an Assembly Clerk with W.J. Young Machinery in Peabody from where he retired. He was an avid reader and loved history, gardening, and in a quiet and unassuming way, have family as an important social function around him. He is survived by: two sons, John Kauppinen, Jr. and Richard Kauppinen, both of Peabody; one daughter, Ruth Craig of Peabody; five grandchildren, Richard Kauppinen, Jr., Katy Leigh Kauppinen, Edgar Craig, III, Cristin Craig, and Kevin Craig, all of Peabody; one nephew, Albert Mantyla, Jr., of Peabody; one great-nephew, Albert Mantyla, III of Peabody, and a sister-in-law, Ruth Mantyla of Peabody. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Richard Kauppinen and Albert Mantyla, Sr. His Funeral will be held on Wednesday at 10 AM in the Cahill facility at 20 Chestnut ST., Peabody, of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home. Relatives and friends kindly invited. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 7 to 9 PM in the funeral home. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody.
