Obituary of Rev. Francis Henry Delaney
Rev. Francis H. Delaney, 78, associate pastor in residence at St. Adelaide’ s Church, West Peabody, died Monday evening at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center Burlington after a short illness.
He was born in Lynn, Ma on December 29, 1926, the son of the late Denis and Margaret (Fitzpatrick) Delaney and was a graduate of St. Mary’ s High School in Lynn in the class of 1944. He then entered St. John’ s Seminary in Brighton and was ordained a diocesan priest on January 10, 1952.
He was first assigned to St. Monica’ s Church in Methuen for 2 years and then served at
St. John’ s Church, Roxbury from 1956 to 1957. He then entered the US Army and served as a chaplain during the cold war in Germany from 1957 to 1959. Returning to the diocese, he was assistant at St. Catherine’ s Church in Norwood from 1959 to 1967.
He was then assigned to St. Patrick’ s Church in Norwood from 1967 to 1969 and then at St. Mary of the Hills Church, Milton from 1969 until 1976. He served as an administer at St. Robert Bellarmine Church, Andover for one year and then became the pastor of St. Andrew’ s Church in Forest Hills from 1977 until 1986. He then served as pastor of St. James Church, Salem form January, 1986 to March 17, 1992 when he was promoted to the parish Vicar at St. Frances X. Cabrini Church in Situate for a year. He then became an administrator at St. Agatha’ s Church, Milton for 3 years unitl his senior retirement status in 1996. For the past 4 years, he had been an in residence associate pastor at St. Adelaide’ s Church .
Fr. Delaney was the police chaplain while serving at St. Catherine’ s Church in Norwood.
Besides his family of fellow priests, he is survived by 2 brother and sisters-in-law, Joseph D. and Dolores Delaney of Peabody and Arthur and Muriel Delaney of Danvers, nine nieces and nephews, Susan Mary Delaney of Medford, James and his wife Dawn Delaney of Lynnfield, Mary-Jo Delaney of Nice, France, Patricia and her husband Steve Catanese of Medfield, Ma, William and his wife Mary Delaney of Beverly, Kathleen Delaney Duggan and her husband, Gregory Heppner of Wenham, Thomas and his wife Brenda Delaney and Frank and his wife Kelly Delaney all of Danvers and Michael and his wife Caroline Delaney of Manchester, NH and 20 grand nieces and grandnephews.
A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM at St. Adelaide’ s Church, Lowell St., West Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Lynn. Rev. Delaney will lie in state on Sunday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at St. Adelaide’ s Church, 708 Lowell Street West Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, April 19, 2005 at 10:00 AM in St. Adelaide’ s Church. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Lynn. Memorial Donations may be made to the Mission Helpers of the Sacred Heart, 1001 West Joppa Road, Baltimore, MD 21204 in his memory.
