Obituary of Elizabeth M. "Bessie" (Hickey) Hinchey
Elizabeth M. “Bessie” (Hickey) Hinchey, 97, of Salem, died peacefully Monday morning at her home after a short illness. She was the wife of the late Salem Hospital Surgeon, Dr. Paul R. Hinchey.
She was born in Peabody on December 10, 1911, the daughter of the late Dr. John J. and May (O’Conor) Hickey and was raised and educated there. She was a graduate of the Sargent School of Allied Health at Boston University.
She had been an athlete and played on the Peabody High School and Boston University School basketball teams. She also played tennis for many years on the North Shore.
She first started a dance studio in Peabody and later with her sister, Mary, they also taught elocution and drama for many years.
After raising her family and the death of her husband, Dr. Paul R. Hinchey, she became the director of volunteers at the Salem hospital. She later became a relocation officer with the Salem Redevelopment Authority and also served as a trustee with the Salem Hospital for many years. In her later years she enjoyed her grandchildren helping and supporting them in their endeavors.
She is survived by her seven sons and daughter, Richard and Sandy Hinchey of Bluebell, PA, George Hinchey and his wife Paula Andrews of Newton, Paul and Lonnie Hinchey of Annapolis, Md., John and Linda Hinchey of Swampscott, Charles Hinchey and his wife, Andree Dickinson and Chris Hinchey and his wife Marie Keaveney Hinchey all of Salem, Peter and Fran Hinchey of Danvers and Mary Clemons of Oxon Hill, MD, fifteen grandchildren, a great grandchild and many nieces and nephews. She was the mother of the late Patricia Hinchey Kane and the sister of the late Mary and Eleanor Hickey.
A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. James Church, Salem at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Hospice of North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, and Danvers, MA 01923 in her memory.
