Obituary of Philip J. Carney
Philip J. Carney, 67, of Danvers and formerly of Peabody, died Wednesday evening at the Beverly Hospital after a brief illness. He was the husband of Dolores (Welling) Carney with whom he shared 44 years of marriage.
He was born in Lynn on November 28, 1940, the son of the late John and Kathryn (Callahan) Carney and was raised in Peabody. He was a graduate of St. John’s Preparatory School in Danvers in the class of 1958 and received his degree from Boston College in 1962.
He then entered the Marine Corp and served during the Cuban Missile crisis and the Vietnam War before his discharge from the Marine Reserves in 1968.
He moved to Ohio where he was a sales and marketing manager for the Dixie Cup Company and later the American Can Company in Cleveland and Columbus before moving back to Danvers, Ma. In 1969. He then became the New England Sales and marketing manager for the Nestle Company for 15 years.
In 1985, he started the Delocar office products Company which he operated for 11 years until 1996. He later was employed for the Edible Arrangement Co. in Beverly and Peabody.
He had been a little league coach in the Danvers Little League for many years and also volunteered with the Boy Scout troop there. He enjoyed watching college sports, especially football and was an avid reader of military history and in particular WW II books.
Surviving him besides his wife are two sons, Daniel P. Carney of Methuen, and Kevin P. Carney of Danvers, a daughter, Karen D. Proto of Saugus, his 5 grandchildren, Allison, Chris, Meghan, Caitlin and Brooke, 4 sisters, Rita Odom, Marguerite Daley and Barbara Carney all of Peabody and Anna Rutan of Charlotte, NC and many nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late John, Paul, Leo and Catherine Carney.
A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His Funeral will be held on Monday at 10:00 AM from the funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St.Mary of the Annunciation Church, Danvers, at 11:00 AM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited.
