Obituary of WIlliam Maynard Twiss

William Millard Twiss, 78, of Nahant and formerly Of Peabody, died Sunday at the E.N. Rogers Veterans Hospital, Bedford, after a Long illness. He was the husband of the late Patricia A. (Hoar) Twiss. He was born in Lynn, Ma. on May 5, 1924, the son of the late Millard R. and Lila (Mc Ewen) Twiss and was raised in Peabody where he attended Peabody High School and excelled in football and played for the 1940 Class B state championship team. He also played basketball and baseball at Peabody High. He entered No. Dakota State University and left to enlist in the army in 1943 And served as a Master Sergeant in the 42nd Rainbow Division in the Battle of The Bulge and helped to liberate those in German concentration camps. He was A recipient of a silver and two bronze stars. Following the war, he graduated from No. Dakota State with a degree in Engineering and started his career with General Electric Co., Lynn where he Was employed for 37 years prior to his retirement 18 years ago. While at General Electric he was associated with the engineering team that developed the Fuel Cell Suystems for all the NASA Space flights including the Space Shuttles. He operated the Bay Side Inn in Nahant for 12 years and was a founder of the Bass Point Boat Club of Nahant. He also belonged to the Volunteer Yacht Club -Of Lynn and the Commodores Club of America. He was belonged to the VFW Post 1011 of Peabody, the American Legion Post 215 of Nahant and the Vittori Rocci Post 56 of Beverly. He also belonged to the A.F. & A.M. Jordan Lodge of Masons. He is survived by a son, Richard Cooke of Lynn, 3 daughters and 2 sons- In-law, Holly Twiss of Kittery, Me., Allison and Clifford Twiss O’ Neill of Nahant And Linda and Kenneth Johnson of Mineral, Wa.; a brother, George Twiss of Fl., 5 grandchildren, Daniel Wright, William Parker O’ Neill and Aislyn O’ Neill all of Nahant, Scott Martin of Kittery, Me. and Brian Johnson of Mineral Wa., a great Grandchild, Hayley McClure of of Kittery, Me. and many nieces and nephews He was the brother of the late David Twiss. A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday at 8:45 P.M. at the Conway, Cahill- Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody facility. A Visitation will be Held on Thursday evening prior to the service from 5:00 until 8:45 P.M. Relatives and Friends kindly invited. Donations may be made to the Unit 62 ABN at the E.N. Rogers VA Hospital, 200 Spring St., Bedford, Ma.01730.
