Obituary of Charles Richard Hannigan, Sr.
Charles Richard Hannigan Sr., 80, of Peabody, beloved husband of Rosemary E. (O’Keefe) Hannigan, died Monday, November 3, 2008 at the Rutland Regional Medical Center in Rutland VT.
Mr. Hannigan was born in Revere on October 21, 1928 the son of the late Charles P. and Bertha (Burns) Hannigan. He was raised in Revere and graduated from the Immaculate Conception High School Class of 1947. In January 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and served as a Sergeant with the 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division in Korea. He was awarded the Purple Heart for shrapnel wounds received in combat in Yanggu Korea on October 7, 1951 and was honorably discharged on May 26, 1952. Mr. Hannigan resided in Revere before moving in 1960 and making his home in Peabody.
While in High School, Mr. Hannigan began his working career as a stereo typist at the Boston Herald where he remained employed for 25 years. He was then employed for 15 years as a mailer at the Boston Globe until his retirement in 1993. His family came first and foremost. He loved traveling to Ireland and as hobbies he enjoyed golfing, following sports, woodworking and doing maintenance on his properties.
In addition to his wife of 52 years he is survived by his loving children and their spouses, Charles R Hannigan Jr. and his significant other Gail Eaton of Danvers, Edward P. and Heather Hannigan, Maureen A. and Charles Kaldes and Nancy M. and Kenneth Kocher all of Peabody; his cherished grandchildren, Drew and Maura Kaldes, Zachary, Raina and Kali Hannigan and many nieces and nephews. His siblings, John Hannigan, Elaine Bernasconi, Josephine Hartnett and Denise Costanza predeceased him.
His funeral will be held on Saturday, November 8, 2008 at 8:45 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., (new location) Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in St. Adelaide Church, 708 Lowell St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody.
