Obituary of Edward G. Chmiel Sr.

Edward G. Chmiel Sr., 88, a well known resident of Peabody, died Sunday evening at the Union Hospital, Lynn after a brief illness. He was the husband of the late Viola “Vi” Irene (Jermyn) Chmiel. He was born in Peabody on April 1, 1920, the son of the late Walenty and Apolonia (Waskiewicz) Chmiel and was a life long resident. Ed was a distinguished veteran of WW 11, where he served in the Army Air Corps and was a recipient of the Bronze Star while serving in France in the Battle of the Bulge. Following his discharge from the Army, he became a mechanic for the Pioneer Garage in Peabody for over 35 years prior to his retirement 15 years ago. He was a founding father of the Peabody Little League and served in many offices including president of the League and was also a manager of the Little League Yankee team for several years. Ed was also active in the Peabody Veterans Council, was a treasurer for 14 years and vice-commander of the PLAV Post 63 of Peabody. He was a member of the UPO, United Polish Organization of Peabody, the Saint Michael’s Society and had been a long and faithful communicant of the former St. Joseph Church in Peabody. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Edward G. and Marcia (Burns) Chmiel Jr. of Peabody, two grandchildren, Edward “Baxter” Chmiel and Charles Chmiel both of Peabody, and his dear friends, Robert “Bob” Corriveau, Lola Busta and Fred Thomas all of Peabody and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late Brian, John and Joseph Chmiel, Anna Mullin, Sophie Danish, Mary Mc Donald and recently Helen Pechinsky. A Visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral home at the 82 Lynn St., Peabody facility. His funeral will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Funeral Home followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Peabody/Salem line at 10:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
