Obituary of Maureen "Moe" (Powers) McCarthy
Salem, January 21, 2009. Maureen (Powers) "Moe" McCarthy 57, of Salem, wife of David F. McCarthy died peacefully at Massachusetts General Hospital on Wednesday evening, January 21, 2009 surrounded by her family. She was the daughter of the late John and Pauline (Foster) Powers.
Born in Salem, Moe was a life-long Salem resident and she graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School and received a Masters Degree in Education from Salem State College. Moe began her teaching career at the Waybright Elementary School in Saugus before transferring to the Veterans Memorial Middle School in Saugus. While David and Moe's children were growing up, Moe chose to be closer to home to share in their upbringing by owning and operating the M&M Nursery School in Salem. Once the children were grown Moe returned to teaching, first at St. John's School in Peabody, and most recently as a Math and Science teacher at the Collins Middle School in Salem.
Moe was "all about her children" and her world revolved around their lives and accomplishments. She also cherished her two grandchildren, Patrick and Polly and when it came to sports, there was no bigger baseball fan than Moe, whether it was a Salem Little League game or a Boston Red Sox game. Moe was also of great faith and was a daily communicant at St. John the Baptist Church until her illness prevented her from attending.
Moe is survived in addition to her husband David, by two sons Daniel P. McCarthy and his fiance Laura Salkins, and Steven P. McCarthy and his companion Kim Nardella, all of Salem, a daughter, Colleen P. Babineau and her husband David E. of Lynn and two grandchildren Patrick and Pauline "Polly" Babineau of Lynn. She is also survived by her cousin Ann "Jackie" Hennessey of Salem and countless friends and extended family.
Friends and family are invited to attend Moe's visitation on Sunday from 3 to 7 PM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street in Peabody. Her funeral will be held on Monday January 26th at 10 A.M. from the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 AM at St. John the Baptist Church, 16 Church Street in Peabody. Burial to follow at St. Mary's Cemetery in Salem.
