Obituary of Beatrice E. (Leahy) Hosman

Beatrice E. (Leahy) Hosman, 103 PEABODY—Beatrice E. (Leahy) Hosman, 103, died Saturday January 24, 2009 at the Rosewood Skilled Nursing Center in Peabody following a brief illness. She was the wife of the late William F. “Pepper” Hosman of Peabody for 37 years until his death in 1967. Mrs. Hosman was born in Salem in 1905, shortly after her parents, the late Michael and Elizabeth (Collins) Leahy had emigrated to the U.S. from County Cork, Ireland. Her father was born and raised in Carraghtuhil and her mother was born in Glanmire. Mrs. Hosman was raised in Salem where she attended St. James Grammar School, and she graduated from Salem High School with Honors, Class of 1923. She later attended Salem Commercial School for two years. She worked briefly for A.C. Lawrence Leather Co. in Peabody as a Secretary where she met her husband in 1928. They were married in the spring of 1930 in St. James Church in Salem, and resided the rest of their lives in Peabody. Over the years, Mrs. Hosman was a communicant of both St. John’s Church in Peabody, and her beloved St. James Church in Salem. She was an Auxilliary Member of the Greater Boston John Fitzgerald Kennedy Ch. 44 of Disabled American Veterans. Beatrice was a devoted homemaker, and will be remembered for her dedication to her family. The family wishes to thank Rosewood Nursing & Rehab for their kindness and support for the past seven years. Mrs. Hosman is survived by four sons and their spouses; Francis & Kathleen (Latour) Hosman and James & Claire (Rafferty) Hosman all of Salem; Thomas and Elizabeth (Crowdis) Hosman of Peabody; and Albert L. Hosman of Stony Brook, NY; ten grandchildren and their spouses, James & Stephanie Hosman of Middleton, John & Tricia Hosman, William & Catherine Hosman, and Michael & Sylvia Hosman all of Peabody; Francis & Nancy Hosman of Marblehead, Timothy & Lo-Ann Hosman of Salem; Albert & Lauren Hosman of Amesbury, Kelley Gondolfo of ME, Jill & Mike Nelson of Haverhill, and Christine & Brian Sammon of Stony Brook, NY; 24 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, William “Pinky” Hosman in 1973, and two grandchildren, Stephen Hosman and Lisa Hosman, and sister of the late Thomas Leahy, Salem Police Officer James Leahy, Margaret Leahy, and Catherine (Leahy) Horwood. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday at 8 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 9 AM in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody, to which relatives & friends invited. A visitation will be held on Tuesday from 3 to 7 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to Rosewood Nursing & Rehab Center, Gazebo Fund, 22 Johnson St., Peabody,MA 01960.
