Thomas E. “Tom” Wythe, Jr.
PEABODY—Thomas E. “Tom” Wythe, Jr., 74, beloved husband of Patricia (Wood) Wythe of Peabody, died unexpectedly early Sunday morning. February 22, 2009 at the North Shore Medical Center—Salem Hospital in Salem following a brief illness.
Born in South Boston, he was the son of the late Thomas E. and Mary (DeLorenzo) Wythe. He lived there in his youth and graduated from Gate of Heaven High School. He then enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean War.
Mr. Wythe joined the Boston Police Department in 1960 for 20 years of service. He was assigned to Station 10 in Roxbury, then many years at Station 7 in East Boston before taking an early retirement in 1980. He also enjoyed his part time work as a Courier with the George Peabody which became North Shore Bank.
He was a member of the Boston Police Patrolman’s Association (BPPA), the Boston Emerald Society, the V.F.W. of Boston, and the A.A.R.P. He also was a Gate Keeper and Ticket Sales for Peabody High School games, and enjoyed spending time at the Liberty Tree Mall in Danvers where from his favored bench was known as the Mayor of Liberty Tree.
He is survived by: his wife, Patricia (Wood) Wythe of Peabody, with whom he shared 45 years of marriage; a son, Joseph T. Wythe of Peabody; a daughter, Ellen P. Tavares of Cambridge; two grandchildren, Brooke M. Farnum and Lexi N. Farnum of Cambridge; a brother-in-law, Joseph Wood of Peabody; three nieces, Barbara McHugh & her daughter Sarah, Paula DuBourdieu, and Marie all of IL. He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Marie & Kevin McHugh.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Thursday at 9 AM from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to the Joslin Diabetes Center, One Joslin Place, Boston, MA 02215.
