Obituary of Humberto R. Tavares

Humberto R. Tavares, 71, of Orlando Florida and formerly of Salem, died Friday evening at the East Orlando Hospital in Florida following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of the late Maria (Machado) Tavares. Born in St. Miguel, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel and Gloria (Rodrigues) Tavares. He was raised and educated in St. Miguel and in 1980; he and his family immigrated to the United States where they settled in Salem for over 28 years. For the past 2 years, he has been living in Orlando, Florida. While living in Salem, he worked as a machine operator for the Salem Suede Leather Company for over 22 years before retiring. He also was a member of the Holy Ghost Society and the CLC club, both in Peabody. He enjoyed gardening and playing soccer and was an avid fan of the Sporting Soccer Team of the Island of St. Miguel. Humberto also played various instruments with the Peabody Portuguese Marching Band. He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Mario and Teresa Rodrigues of Orlando, FLA., two daughters and sons-in-law, Maria S and Francisco Nunes and Maria L and Fernando Bettencourt, all of Peabody, four brothers, Manuel Tavares of St. Miguel, Azores, Portugal, Gabriel Tavares of Canada, Jose Tavares of Peabody, and Armando Tavares of Lawrence, a sister, Isaura Couto of St. Miguel, Azores, Portugal, six grandchildren, Kevin, Dereck and Sabrina Nunes, and Caitlyn, Tiffany, and the late Joshua Bettencourt, and is also survived by several nieces and nephews. His Funeral Service will be held on Wednesday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Walsh Ave, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
