Obituary of Mel "Smitty" Smith
PEABODY - Mel "Smitty" Smith, 81, beloved husband of Helen (Simpson) Smith of Peabody, died peacefully on Wednesday March 25, 2009 in the Rosewood Nursing & Rehab Center in Peabody following a long illness.
Born in Wakefield, he was the son of the late Harry and Virginia (Ryer) Smith. He lived in Wakefield in his youth and then enlisted in the Merchant Marine.
He was a veteran of both World War II and the Korean War as he served in the United States Army.
Mr. Smith worked as a Printing Press Machinist with Murray Printing when it was located in Wakefield, and then they located to Westford where he worked until retiring. After retiring he became Maintenance Supervisor at the Holiday Inn Hotel in Peabody.
"Smitty" was very involved in activities that benefited the youth in Peabody. He was a Past President of Peabody Little League, involved with Peabody Youth Hockey, and was an Umpire with Peabody Girls Softball for years. He also was a member of the Masons, Essex Lodge of Salem and the B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 1409 of Peabody.
He is survived by: his wife, Helen (Simpson) Smith of Peabody, with whom he shared 53 years of marriage; two sons and daughters-in-law, David & Kathy Smith and Donald & Sherry Smith, both of Peabody; a daughter and son-in-law, Bonnie & John Carroll of Peabody; six grandchildren, John & Daniel Carroll, Cameron & Sydney Smith, and Gina & Nicholas Adiletto all of Peabody; a brother, Paul Smith of NV, a sister, Betty Myers of OH; and he was brother-in-law of Nancy & Richard De Meo of Peabody, and he leaves many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by six siblings.
A visitation will be held on Friday from 5 to 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to a Funeral Service at 11:30 AM in the funeral home. Burial will be in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park. Memorial donations may be made to Haven From Hunger, 71 Wallis St., Peabody, MA 01960.
