Obituary of Basil K. "Bill" Galatis
Basil K. “Bill” Galatis, 84, of Beverly and formerly of Saugus and Somerville, died Tuesday evening at the Golden Living Center in Gloucester following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Carol (Thompson) Galatis with whom he shared over 16 years of marriage.
Born in Chelsea, he was the son of the late Kostas and Loula (Stavropoulos) Galatis. He was raised and educated in Chelsea and was a graduate of Chelsea High School, class of 1943. He later lived in Saugus, Somerville, and for the past 13 years has lived in Beverly.
He was a veteran of World War II who served with the United States Navy aboard the USS Walter S. Brown and was honorable discharged in March of 1947. After the war, Bill worked throughout the area, first as a sheet metal worker and later was a food manager for a local bakery. After his retirement, he worked additional years as a driver for the North Shore meals and wheels program.
Bill was a Senior Member Consistory 32 degree mason with the Charity Lodge in Cambridge. He also was a member of the Shriners and the Helenic Squares and Compass Club. .
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son, William Galatis of Saugus, three daughters and sons-in-law, Christine and her husband Michael Cavallo of Stoneham, Karen Galatis and her husband Bill Smith of Arlington, and Lisa and her husband Michael Kalfopoulos of Winchester, a sister Kay Murphy of Revere, three brothers, Nicholas Galatis of Gloucester, Socrates Galatis of Chelsea, John Galatis of Revere, and is also survived by five grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. A Masonic Service will be held on Monday at 7:00 PM and his funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by Services in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours on Monday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody, or Golden Living Center, 272 Washington St., Gloucester, MA 01930.
