Obituary of Mary (Alexopoulos) Tranos
Mary (Alexopoulos) Tranos, 92, matriarch and wife of the late Charles George Tranos of Salem, passed suddenly leaving a loving family and many endearing friends.
Mary, who was reputed to be one of the two most beautiful girls in Peabody (along with her sister Tessie) leaves a son, George C. Tranos and his wife Judith, a daughter, Karen L’Italien and her husband James, a brother Charles Alexopoulos and long time girlfriend Chris Reddy, a niece, Cynthia Bregor and her husband Ted, grandchildren, Melissa Devereaux and her husband Alex, and Adam L’Italien. She was the sister of the late Tessie Arnotis and her husband Peter. She also leaves nieces Marlene Sorrentino, Floria Ito and nephew Jonathan Arnotis.
Mary was an early pioneer of women’s equality, serving as the first female to hold a management position at CBS Hytron in Salem during the 1940’s before resigning to start a family. She committed her life to her family, guiding her children to successful careers in corporate management and teaching, and nurturing her grandchildren to promising careers in marketing and engineering management.
Always active, Mary lived independently in the family home, and loved to travel. She visited many European countries, cruised the Atlantic and visited such Far East destinations as Hong Kong, Japan and China. She especially enjoyed the serenity of Switzerland, but loved the activity of any casino. Mary was an avid fan of the Red Sox and Patriots, and of course, her soaps. She was particularly admired for her green thumb and exceptional Greek cooking. Mary will be long remembered and missed by her friends and family.
The family would particularly like to thank the North Shore Cancer Center of Peabody and all her friends and supporters there, including Melissa Keon, and the American Red Cross for providing her the gift of life. Mary was a generous contributor to numerous charities. In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the North Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Dr., Peabody, MA 01960 or any branch of the American Red Cross.
Her funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by Funeral Services at St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, Paleologos St., Peabody at 10:00 AM to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
