Obituary of Sarah A. "Sally" (Manning) Carlson

Peabody - Sarah A. "Sally" (Manning) Carlson, 79, wife of the late Harold Carlson, died Monday morning April 6, 2009 at her home following a lengthy illness. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late John and Catherine (Kildunne) Manning. She was a lifelong resident of the city and graduated from Peabody High School. Mrs. Carlson worked as an Operator with New England Telephone in her youth. As her family grew up, she worked at various schools in the Cafeteria for Peabody Public Schools, and then worked as a Clerk for over 30 years with Verizon, formerly known as NYNeX Yellow Pages. Sally was active with softball, was in the Eastman Gelatin Bowling League, was a volunteer Usher with North Shore Music Theater, and enjoyed travel highlighted by trips to New Zealand, England, and visiting with relatives. She will be remembered as one whose sense of family values was very important, and cherished her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Telephone Pioneers Club, and was gifted in crafts doing Asian needle work in Japanese Bunka Style. She is survived by: a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy Carlson Smith and her husband Bill Smith of Peabody; two sons and daughters-in-law, Mark & Amy Carlson formerly of Danvers, now of Honeybrook, PA and Eric & Shana Carlson of Longmont, CO; four grandchildren, Kelsey and Cody Carlson, and Tyler and Hannah Carlson; several step-grandchildren; two sisters, Helen (Manning) Gibbs of Beverly and Frances Manning of Peabody, and many nieces, nephews and their families. Her funeral will be held on Tuesday April 14, 2009 at 9 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in St. Ann's Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited. A visitation will be held on Monday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. Memorial donations may be made to All Care Hospice, 16 City Hall Square, Lynn, MA 01901 or to the Alzheimer's Association, 311 Arsenal St., Watertown, MA 02472.
