Obituary of Mary J. Karabelas

Mary J. Karabelas, 83 years, of Peabody, died Saturday, Oct. 26 at the Peabody Glen Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Peabody. Miss Karabelas was born Aug. 15, 1919 in Peabody daughter of the late Nicholas and Athena (Manitakos) Karabelas. She was raised and educated in Peabody graduating from Peabody High School class of 1936. She then pursued her education at the Hathorne Business School, Wilfred Academy and the Garland School all in Boston. She owned and operated Mary’ s Beauty Shop on Margin St. in Peabody for several years. She then traveled extensively throughout Europe and wintered in Florida. She was an avid tennis player and golfer. As a young girl she enjoyed figure skating. She is survived by three sisters, Irene Karabelas of North Andover, Portia Karabelas of Peabody and Doris Stavropoulos of West Roxbury; a sister-in-law, Pierrette Karabelas of West Palm Beach, FL; a niece, Mary Kamamis of Great Neck, Long Island, NY; two nephews, Paul Stavropoulos of West Roxbury and Peter Stavropoulos of Wayland; three great nieces and a great nephew. She was also the sister of the late Louis, James and Charles Dino Karabelas. Her funeral service will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., Peabody location. Relatives and friends may pay their respects Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. Burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
