Obituary of Lygia Alves

Lygia Alves, 71, of Peabody, died Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Family Hospice house in Danvers after a short illness. She was born in Sao Paulo, Brazil on July 22, 1937, the daughter of the late Julio and Alda (Bitencourt) Alves and was raised there before immigrating to California in 1967. She lived there for three years before moving to Peabody. She was first employed at the Osram Sylvania Loring Ave. Salem plant. She then attended the Beverly Hospital School of Nursing and was a certified Nurses Assistant with the Visiting Nurse Association in Danvers for 15 years prior to her retirement. She enjoyed dancing especially to rock and roll music and was devoted to her nephews and great niece and nephew. She had been a member of the Peabody Council on Aging. She is survived by her sister, Nair Ferreira of Peabody, two brothers, Rubens Alves and his wife Anita, and Edson Alves all of Brazil; her nephews, Sergio and his wife Stacie Ferreira of Melrose, Bryan and his wife Amy Ferreira of Millbury, MA, and the late Sidney Ferreira and his wife Julietta of California; a great niece and great nephew, Seth and Selene Ferreira both of Melrose; her nieces: Adriana, Vanessa and Tatiana of Brazil and Peabody; her best friends, Tomas and Izaura Nogueira and their son Carlos along with their family of Peabody and Salem. A visitation will be held on Monday, April 27, 2009 from 9:30 to 10:45 at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 20 Church St., (Downtown) Peabody facility. Her Funeral Mass will be held in St. John’s the Baptist Church next door at 11:00 AM. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Expressions of sympathy may be made to North Shore Cancer Center, 17 Centennial Drive, Peabody, MA 01960 in her memory.
