Obituary of Manuel T. Bettencourt

Manuel T. Bettencourt, 78, of Peabody, died early Sunday morning at his home surrounded by his loving family following a long illness. He was the devoted husband of Glorinda (Bettencourt) Bettencourt with whom he shared over 55 years of marriage. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Carlos and Graziela (de Jesus) Bettencourt. He was raised in Portugal and in 1956 he immigrated with his family to the United States and has been a resident of Peabody ever since. Manuel first worked in the leather industry for many years and then worked as a machine operator for GTE Sylvania in Danvers for 15 years before retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Holy Ghost Society and a long time and dedicated parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody. Manuel loved playing the guitar, singing, fishing, gardening, and swimming and had a love of animals and woodworking. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Olivia Bettencourt of Fort Pierce, FL, five daughters and three sons-in-law, Maria and Agostinho Ramos of Georgetown, Judy Bettencourt of Peabody, Linda and Anthony Cappucio of Hudson, ME, Anne Marie and Robert Jarvis of Danvers and Sister Kathleen Bettencourt, O’Carm of Peabody, six grandchildren, Jeanette and her husband Christopher Cattan, Natalie Ramos, Lauren and A.J. Cappuccio, and Spencer and Veronica Jarvis, and also by two great grandchildren, Joseph Ramos and Ava Cattan. His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 4:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
