Obituary of Eugenia (Vieira) (Bettencourt) Silva

Peabody - Eugenia (Vieira) (Bettencourt) Silva, 91, beloved wife of the late Jose Silva and the late Joao Bettencourt, died peacefully Thursday evening at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home in Peabody while in the presence of her family. Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, she was the daughter of the late Manuel Sousa Vieira and Eugenia da Gloria. She lived there for 39 years, then came to the United States on August 17, 1959 and lived in Peabody for the last 52 years. Mrs. Silva worked at Ideal Baby Shoe in Danvers, then at Bleyer Industries in Wakefield from where she retired almost 25 years ago. Eugenia enjoyed Bingo, gardening, and doing crochet. She was gifted as an accomplished Seamstress, and made numerous garments and enjoyed mending clothing for others. She was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody, was a member of the Holy Ghost Society of Peabody, and will be remembered for her loving dedication to family and friends. She is survived by: two sons, Joao Loredano Bettencourt of Peabody and Manuel V. Bettencourt of Medford; a step-son, Joseph Silva of Peabody; ten grandchildren, Doreen Bettencourt Wotring of Lynn, Manuel J. Bettencourt of FL, Yvonne Bettencourt, Greg Bettencourt, and Nancy Bettencourt all of Peabody, John A. Bettencourt of Boston, John Q. Bettencourt of Peabody, Olga Bettencourt of Danvers, Nelson Bettencourt of Peabody, and Dina Hawkes of Sandown, NH; 18 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a two brothers, Joao Vieira and Manuel Vieira, and two sisters, Emilia Vieira and Hermingarda Vieira in Portugal. A visitation will be held on Sunday from 4 to 8 P.M. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 20 Church St. location, Peabody. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather on Monday at 9 AM from the funeral home followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to either Azorean Brotherhood of Holy Ghost Society, Howley St., Peabody, MA 01960 or to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B 102, Danvers, MA 01923.
