Obituary of Gerald M. "Bunkie" Lilly

Gerald M. “Bunkie” Lilly, 85, of Peabody, died at his home following a brief illness on Saturday, May 30, 2009 with his family at his side. He was the devoted husband of the late Grace (Peckham) Lilly. Bunkie was born on April 5, 1924, in Lynn, the son of the late Hebert and Hilda (Corkham) Lilly. He was raised and graduated from Peabody High School and was a lifelong resident of the city. He enlisted into the United Sates Navy on January 25, 1947 served aboard the U.S.S. Haraden and was honorably discharged on January, 24, 1955. Mr. Lilly worked for over 35 years as a shoe machinist for Prime Manufacturing in Lynn until his retirement in 1987. He devoted his entire life to his family and later was so proud of his grandchildren and their accomplishments. Bunkie was very active with Catholic Charities and every Christmas Season he would help wrap presents for all the children. He was an avid fan and supporter of the PVMHS track team, enjoyed caning chairs as a hobby, and was an active campaigner for former Mayor Torigian and presently for Mayor Bonfanti. In his retirement, Bunkie enjoyed spending the summers at Lake Shore Park at Winnipesaukee, NH. Bunkie is survived by his children, Glenn R. Lilly and his wife Kathy of Freedom, NH, and Gail R. Provost of Peabody; 5 grandchildren and their spouses, Richard Provost III and Katie, Adam Provost and Amy, Derek Provost, Joshua Lilly and Erin, Michelle Page and Bill, and is also survived by four great grandchildren. His son-in-law Richard Provost Jr. predeceased him. His family will receive relatives and friends on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. (location) Peabody. His funeral service will be held on Thursday, June 4, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home. Burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Peabody. The family requested memorial contributions to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Suite B-102, Danvers, MA 01923 or a charity of one’s choice.
