Obituary of Stella (Spyropoulos) Mattarocchia

Stella (Spyropoulos) Mattarocchia 79 years, wife of Carl T. Joe Mattarocchia of Peabody, died Wednesday evening at her home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Mattarocchia was born September 19, 1925 in Peabody daughter of the late Peter and Christine (Sakellarides) Spyropoulos. She was raised in Peabody and graduated from Peabody High School class of 1942 and was a lifelong resident. She received her degree in Education and in 1962 her Masters in Education from Salem State College. Mrs. Mattarocchia’ s teaching career began in Beverly and Ipswich. She taught in Peabody for 23 years at the elementary, secondary and high school retiring in 1990 as a Guidance Councilor. She was a member of the Massachusetts Retired Teachers Association, Past Matron of the Eastern Star, the Daughters of Penelope and the Philoptohos Athena at St. St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church. Her life revolved around her grand and great grandchildren. She vacationed in Aruba for many years, traveled worldwide and enjoyed going to Foxwoods. In addition to her husband of 47 years, she is survived by a daughter, Elaine M. Rice of Peabody; 2 sons, George Morfis of Peabody and Peter Morfis of Wenham; 5 grandchildren, Michael Rice of No. Andover, James Rice and Chris Morfis both of Peabody, George Morfis of Marlboro and John Morfis of Danvers; 8 great grandchildren; 2 sisters-in-law, Helen Spyropoulos of Topsfield and Stella Spyropoulos of Danvers and several nieces and nephews. Her siblings John and Charles Spyropoulos pre deceased her. Her funeral will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St. location Peabody followed by a service at 10 a.m. in St. Vasilios Greek Orthodox Church, 5 Paleologos St., Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Sunday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn. Retired Peabody School Teacher and Guidance Councilor.
