Obituary of Ethel "Inie" Inez (Evitts) Koen

Ethel “Inie” (Evitts) Koen PEABODY—The family of Ethel “Inie” (Evitts) Koen of Peabody wishes to thank everyone for their good wishes and support; our loving family and friends, The Peabody Police Department, the Peabody Fire Department, the City of Peabody Department of Public Works, the St. Ann’s Parish community, neighbors, and colleagues. Ethel “Inie” (Evitts) Koen, 81, beloved wife of Richard Koen, died at home on Saturday morning following a long illness. Born in Peabody, she was the daughter of the late Frank and Mary Ellen (Callahan) Evitts, and was a lifelong resident of the city. She graduated from Peabody High School. Inie worked as a technician with Liberty Tree Pharmacy and was a receptionist with the Children’s Hospital of Salem. She enjoyed playing beano, and would travel throughout the area to play with friends. In addition, she was a neighborhood leader in fundraising for the American Heart Association. Her greatest joy was her role as a devoted wife and mother. She is survived by: her husband, Richard Koen of Peabody, with whom she shared 60 years of marriage; three sons and two daughters-in-law, Michael and his wife Valerie Koen, John and his wife Kim Koen, and Dan Koen all of Peabody; two daughters and a son-in-law, Donna and her husband James Mahaney of Marshfield and Susan Koen of Winterport, ME; nine grandchildren, Maryellen Weeks of Plymouth, R.J. Mahaney of Grand Forks, ND, Andrew Koen, Christopher Koen, Nicholas Koen, Michelle Koen, and Casey Koen, all of Peabody; Jared Koen and Ashley Koen both of Groveland; and one great-grandson; a brother, Lenny Evitts of Saugus; two sisters, Evelyn Lesch of Danvers and Louise Killeen of Beverly, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother Frank “Buddy” Evitts and a sister Mary Shea. Her Funeral Mass of Christian Burial was held on Wednesday at 10 AM in St. Ann’s Church, Peabody, with burial in Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
