Obituary of Nelson C. Candido
Nelson C. Candido, 81, of Peabody, died Saturday evening at the Boston Medical Center following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Maria A (Ramos Felix) Candido with whom he shared over 59 years of marriage.
Born in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, he was the son of the late Manuel and Mariana (Candida da Conceicao) Candido. He was raised and educated in Portugal and in 1972 he immigrated with his family to the United States where he has been a resident of Peabody for the past 37 years.
While living in the Azores, Nelson worked as a carpenter, cabinet maker, and finally was the captain of a fishing vessel, Nossa Seniora de Saude. He also was an avid soccer player in Portugal until the age of 39. While living in Peabody, he worked as a machine operator for Webster Industries for eight years before retiring.
Nelson was a member of Our Lady of Help, Club Luis Camoes, and a devoted parishioner of Our Lady of Fatima Church. He also enjoyed playing cards and dominos, gardening and was a huge fan of the Benfica Soccer team in Portugal.
Besides his loving wife, he is survived by six children and their spouses, Fatima and Benjamin Sousa, Lucia and Joao Silva, Manuela and Manuel Silva, Maria and Rui Bettencourt, Natalino Candido and Fatima Calisto, and Emanuel and Kerry Candido, 13 grandchildren, Helia and Alice Sousa, John and Richard Silva, Matthew and Nelson Silva, Andra and Kristina Calisto, Meghan, Marina, Mia Bettencourt, and James and Alexander Candido, 2 great grandchildren, Benjamin Silva and Colby Silva, and by 2 nieces and a nephew. He was the brother of the late Fernando C. Bettencourt.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday at 10:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem
