Obituary of Lucy (Madruga) Bettencourt

PEABODY-Lucy (Madruga) Bettencourt, 90, wife of the late Frank S. Bettencourt, died Sunday at the Peabody Glen Nursing Home in Peabody following a long illness. Born in Salem, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Mary (Cunha) Madruga. She lived in Salem in her youth and attended Salem schools. She lived in Peabody for over 70 years. She worked as an Assembler with Hytron Industries in Salem during World War II, then was a homemaker with her family and children. Mrs. Bettencourt was a member and communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church in Peabody for many years. She is survived by: one son, Francis L. Bettencourt of Bradenton, FL; one daughter, Sandi Lent of Peabody; four grandchildren, Donna Stephens and Linda Jope, both of Wenham, Mark Bettencourt of Bradenton, FL, and Frank Lent of Peabody; seven great-grandchildren; two brothers, Manuel Madruga and Bartholomew Madruga, both of Peabody; one sister, Mary L’ Italien of Salem, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank S. Bettencourt, a grandson Francis L. Bettencourt, Jr., and sister of the late Edmund Madruga, Helen Nunes, and Margaret Gil. Her funeral will be held on Thursday at 9 AM from the Conway facility at 12 Chestnut St. of the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10 AM in Our Lady of Fatima Church, relatives and friends kindly invited. A visitation will be on Wednesday from 4 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’ s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 10 Elm St., Danvers, MA 01923.
