Obituary of George Murphy

George Murphy PEABODY--George Murphy, 102, beloved husband of the late Katherine (Fitzpatrick) Murphy, died peacefully at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in Peabody. Born in Peabody, he was the son of the late Daniel and Ellen (Kelly) Murphy. He was a lifelong resident of the city and graduated from Peabody High School. He was known to be the last living student who survived the St. John’s School Fire on October 28, 1915. Mr. Murphy was a veteran of WWII having served in the Army Air Force. He was also very active in civic affairs with the City of Peabody. He served on the Peabody School Committee from 1947 to 1955. He also worked for the Peabody Public Schools, one role as a Truant Officer, until he retired in the early 1970’s. He was a member and served in several leadership capacities with the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council 508 in Peabody. He enjoyed international travel, and was very proud to be part of a five-generation family. He is survived by seven nieces and nephews, seven great-nieces and nephews, and three great-great-nieces and nephews. Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by five brothers and four sisters, Daniel, James, Jack, Charles, Nicholas, Mary, Catherine, Anna, and Ellen. His funeral will be held on Friday at 10 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St. location, Peabody followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Friday August 7, 2009 at 11 A.M. in St. John the Baptist Church, Peabody, to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be on Thursday from 5 to 8 P.M. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of the North Shore, 75 Sylvan St., Danvers, MA 01923.
