Obituary of Daniel J. Sweeney

Daniel J. Sweeney, 78, of Peabody, died Monday evening at the Radius Health Care Center in Danvers following a brief illness. He was the devoted husband of Rose (Passanisi) Sweeney with whom he shared over 51 years of marriage. Born in Woburn, he was the son of the late Daniel and Mary (Hickey) Sweeney. He was a life long resident of Peabody and attended St. Mary’s School in Lynn for 11 years before graduating from Peabody High School. After high school, Daniel enlisted in the United States Army and served his country during the Korean War and was honorably discharged in August of 1956. After the war, Daniel worked for the city of Peabody as a firefighter for nearly 30 years before retiring in 1986. Daniel was a 3rd degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus, Leo Council #508 in Peabody and was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernia’s, Division 11 in Peabody as well. He enjoyed boating and doing crossword puzzles and when he retired, he wintered in Florida for 13 years and went on many cruises, the last of which was last year where he celebrated his 50th wedding anniversary with his family. Besides his loving wife, he is survived by three sons and a daughter-in-law, Daniel and Anne Sweeney of Danvers, William Sweeney and his companion, Anita Dancs, of Sunderland, and Paul Sweeney of Gloucester and is also survived by his two loving grandchildren, Nathan Sweeny and Donovan Sweeney. His funeral service will be held on Friday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home 82 Lynn St., Peabody followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at St. Ann’s Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00 AM. Burial in Calvary Cemetery, Washington St., Woburn.
