Obituary of Very Reverend Leo McCarthy
The Very Reverend Leo McCarthy, Order of Carmelites, died on November 18, 2009 in Sarasota, Florida. He was 75.
Father McCarthy was born in Salem on August 29, 1934. He entered the Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary, Order of Carmelites, in 1955 and was ordained a priest in 1962. Among his many assignments, faculty member of DeSales High School in Louisville, KY and of Salpointe Catholic High School in Tucson, AZ, where he also served as Principal.
He was the Campus Minister at Dartmouth College in Hanover, NH, Associate Director of Religious Education and a member of the Priest Senate for the Diocese of Phoenix, AZ. He was co-founder and Executive Director of the Kino Institute and executive priest of the Worldwide Marriage Encounter, both in Phoenix, AZ. He was Director of Theological Formation at Whitefriars Hall, Director of Education Relations at Washington Theological Union, and chaplain at Providence Hospital in Washington, DC, National Vocation Director for the Carmelite Province and Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Tucson, AZ. He served as Provincial Councilor and Prior Provincial for the Carmelite Province and was Parochial Vicar and Pastor at Our Lady on Mount Carmel Parish in Osprey, FL.
During his retirement, he served as Commissary Provincial for the Eastern Commissariat of the Province. He is survived by brothers, Robert and Stephen McCarthy.
His wake will be held on Monday, November 30, 2009 from 3:00 until 8:00 PM at the Carmelite Priory, 4 Wheatland St., Peabody and a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, December 1, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Discalced Carmelite Nuns Monastery Chapel, 15 Mount Carmel Road, Danvers, MA to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend.
