Obituary of Sydney C. Barnes, Sr.

Sydney C. Barnes, Sr., 86 years, husband of Mary (MacIlvaine) Barnes of Peabody and the late Mary F. (Ginnetty) Barnes died Monday at the Kindred Hospital of Boston North Shore in Peabody following a brief illness. Mr. Barnes was born Sept. 4, 1915 in Readville, MA son of the late Alfred and Ada (Wolley) Barnes. He was raised and educated in Readville. Mr. Barnes moved to Peabody in 1955. Prior to his retirement in 1971 he was employed as an iron worker for 38 years with the American Architectural of East Boston. After his reticent he was then employed as a school custodian with the City of Peabody for the next ten years until 1981. He was a proud member and past steward of the Iron Worker’ s Union Local #501 of Quincy. He was a member of the Peabody Lodge of Elks #1409, the Peabody A.O.H. Div. #11 and former board member of the Peabody Council on Aging. He was very active at the Peter A. Torigian Community Life Center in Peabody where he taught line dancing and played banjo. He was also a member of the Beverly Barbershop Quartet. As hobbies he enjoyed reading, home repair projects and crossword puzzles. In addition to his wife he is survived by three sons and their wives, Harold E. and Elaine Barnes of Douglas, MA, John E. Jack and Rose Barnes of Las Vegas, NV and Charles G. & Susan Barnes of Beverly; two daughters and their husbands, Christine A. & William Dunn, Marylou Barnes-Bartkiewicz and Mark Bartkiewicz all of Peabody; three sisters, Ada Daley of Everett, Lillian Harris of Cape Cod and Elsie Bobbie Sinclair of AL; seventeen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was also the father of the late Peabody Police Office Sidney C. Barnes, Jr. and brother of the late Charles Barnes. The family will conduct his funeral service Thursday at 11 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home at the 12 Chestnut St. facility (978-531-0398) Peabody. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Wednesday 4 - 8 p.m. Burial in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Contributions may be made to the Peter A.
