Obituary of Jose L. Jorge
Jose L. Jorge, 87, of Salem, died Sunday at the Grosvenor Nursing Home in Salem following a brief illness. He was the beloved husband of Rose (Sousa) Jorge with whom he shared over 64 years of marriage.
Born in Palmer, MA, he was the son of the late Antonio and Jacinta (Lopes) Jorge. He later moved to Portugal for many years before returning to the United States where he lived in Peabody for 10 years and has spent the last 31 years living in Salem.
While living in Portugal he served with the Portuguese Army during World War II before returning back to Peabody. He then worked for a Road Construction Company, Trimount Paving in Peabody, as a heavy equipment operator for over 25 years before retiring about 15 years ago.
Jose loved gardening and he loved tending to his summer vegetable garden, but what was most important to him was the time he spent with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was also a member of the Club Luis de Camoes.
Besides his loving wife, Jose is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Maria Marshall of Shrewsbury and Tina and Arthur Nicolaisen of Andover, two sisters, Emily Carva of Peabody and Elizena Portela of Portugal, and is also survived by his four loving grandchildren and six great grandchildren. He was the brother of the late Fernando Jorge.
Jose’s funeral service will be held on Thursday at 9:00 AM from the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn St., Peabody, followed by a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Our Lady of Fatima Church, Peabody to which relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Burial in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Salem.
