Phyllis, Jen, Greg and family: I am so sorry for your loss. I heard today at school and did not know. I did see a big crowd at Conway last night on my way home from school. I never worked with Lou, but I had the pleasure of seeing him at the Brown when I student taught. He was a guest reader in K and then my kids would excitedly tell me how he read in their classes. He was a true gentleman and a wonderful role model...may his hard work be carried on through the children he has touched. With sympathy and love, Maryellen, Andrew, and Jack Hamel (South and Brown)

To the Surman Family - My heartfelt condolences to you on your loss. Mr. Surman was a good and dedicated man. I graduated from the Brown School in 1976 and remember fondly how he would come into our English classes and give impromptu lectures (gerunds were a favorite topic, I believe). I also remember him teaching me how to punt a football and telling me how to hit a baseball by rolling my top hand on the swing. He is the subject of many fond memories of many South Peabody children. He will be missed.

To the Surman family - So sorry to hear of Mr. Surman's passing. He was such a big part of my childhood & I have many stories by which to remember him. Once I broke my glasses so I wouldnt have to wear them in 3rd grade and he spent a good 1/2 hour with me in his office telling me how i looked like a "model" and was so beautiful with my glasses on. I will never forget that. He was a very patient man and very encouraging. He also taught many of us to play basketball and not only taught us but followed the kids right through high school. He will be remembered by many generations. We need more "Mr. Surmans" in the school systems today.

We lost a great educator and man. Mr Surman will always be remembered as a man who not only believed in the importance of education but the importance of athletics and teamwork. He was a wonderful principal and a strong influence in the lives of countless children. I will always remember him in the school yard playing wall ball and singing along with us as we sang happy birthday to a friend over the loud speaker. Rest in peace Mr. Surman. My prayers and sympathy are with his family. May you find solace in knowing that he helped shape the lives of so many young people.
