Obituary of Lockhart J. Smith Jr.
Lockhart J. “Smitty” Smith Jr., 88, of Saugus, husband of the late Anna J. (Creasey) Smith, died unexpectedly at his home on Sunday, January 31, 2010.
Mr. Smith was born on July 12, 1921, in Marshfield, son of the late Lockhart J. Smith Sr., and Myrtle (Willett) Smith. He was raised and educated in Marshfield and Brookline. In 1942, he enlisted into the United States Navy and served as an Aviation Machinist Mate First Class until receiving his honorable discharge in 1946. Following WW II, he pursued his education at MIT in Cambridge.
Mr. Smith taught aeronautical and automotive technology at Wentworth Institute of Technology for over 30 years retiring as a Professor Emeritus in 1986. Smitty as he was known by his friends and colleagues was a skilled pilot and propeller engine mechanic and on many occasions his friends from all over the United States would reach out to him in their time of need in order to solve mechanical problems on their propeller engines, and also for many years Smitty was an aeronautical and mechanical advisor to FAA investigating teams. Smitty was a member of the Aeronautical Experimental Aircraft Research and the Antique Aircraft Association.
Mr. Smith is survived by his daughter and her husband Pamela S. and Richard Faraci; a son, Dennis K. Smith of Saugus with whom he lived; his grandchildren, Christine S. Taylor and her husband Jeremy of Nashua, NH, Andrew R. Faraci of Rowley and William C. Faraci of Boston; his 3 great grandchildren, Rachael E. Beauchemin, Drake C. Taylor and Corwyn L. Taylor, and many nieces and nephews. His son Lockhart J. Smith III and his sister Marie Eichmann predeceased him.
His funeral service will be held on Thursday, February 4, 2010 at 11:30 a.m. in the Conway, Cahill-Brodeur Funeral Home, 82 Lynn Street facility, Peabody. The Reverend Grant Hoofnagle, Pastor at the South Congregational Church Peabody will officiate. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours are Wednesday, February 3, 2010 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Marshfield. Memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the E.N. Rogers Memorial Veterans Hospital, C/O Development office for Alzheimer Research, 200 Springs St., Bedford MA 01730.
